Possible reactions after osteopathic treatment

During an osteopathic session the therapist creates new mobility gains within different body systems.

Your body needs time to process these changes, after therapy it will be searching a new balance. Dependent upon the manual techniques used, the seriousness of your complaint and your general physical condition, various reactions may occur which may be felt up to 2 to 5 days after treatment.

The following reactions may occur…

  • muscle pain
  • headache
  • nausea
  • thinner or discoloured stools
  • general discomfort
  • emotionally sensitive
  • less appetite
  • the original complaints that brought you to the therapist can be amplified
  • weariness
  • vertigo

Every human being is different. Not every body succeeds in integrating the osteopathic corrections as quickly.

What can you do …

You should take some action yourself, to further stimulate the recovery and healing ability of your body. You will be given advice on living and eating habits, as well as specific exercises. The effect of a treatment will be strongly influenced by your behavior after the therapy and your ability to follow our recommendations punctually.

To obtain an optimal therapeutic effect, it is best to rest for an hour after treatment.

A treatment will also release a lot of waste materials in your body. Therefore you should drink enough water until a few days after treatment, at least 2 liters of water in 24 hours. Use decarbonated water. Water is a basic solvent for all digestive products and is essential to secrete the waste products from our body.

Try to avoid heavy emotional stress or physical effort after treatment. After treatment you will find yourself in a ‘gray zone’ ; complaints have been treated, but they have not completely disappeared. If the body is physically or emotionally too much burdened after treatment, there will not be enough energy left to integrate the mobility gains. The body may return to the condition it was in before starting treatment.

Walking, cycling and light exercises are recommended.
